Another Award for Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club

The photo shows Peter Chandler , North of England Rotary Clubs District Governor  2016/17 presenting the Community Service Award to Mike Overy, Chairman Special projects , Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club.

The latest award is the North East District Rotary Clubs Community Award which Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club won for the excellent fundraising event at Yarm School Alexandra Auditorium in February where James Dale and his group Sweet baby James performed songs from Carol King and James Taylor. Over £11,000 was raised for Prostate Cancer Robot assisted surgery.

The money will be used for consultant training and to further extend the use of Prostate Cancer Robotic Surgery at James Cook University Hospital. Not only a great fundraiser for the local organisation, but also a great social event.

Total fundraising for the year was in excess of £20,000.

Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club visit Shildon Railway Museum

On Tuesday 17th October 6 members of our Rotary club including our President David Jackson had a conducted tour of the Shildon Railway Museum ( a branch of the National Railway Museum of York ) which was very interesting . Among the exhibits was the original Sans Peril which was built in 1879 to compete in the Rainhill trials , although more powerful it proved not to have the speed of Stephenson’s Rocket. Other exhibits included an express locomotive from 1893 and a special engine built to a design for use in the second world war . Another display featured the APT ( Advanced Passenger Train ) tilting train developed in the 1970’s which recorded speeds of 153 mph but was eventually mothballed . The star of the museum was the engine Winston Churchill and the baggage van that carried his coffin which had been completely restored at the Shildon workshops . Members enjoyed the visit and thanked the tour guide .

Great Night Out

Members gathered at Mike and Shirley’s home for a “Rotary at Home” evening with fantastic food, drinks, great conversation and a really enjoyable night. Members pay a small charge and any extra after expenses goes to charity.

Christmas Float Plans

Members discussed the overhaul of the Christmas float ahead of our collections in the Marton and Acklam areas during December. Key requirements are the need to improve the Christmas Tree lighting , ensure adequate support each night and collections up to 2000 hrs. The static float to be used at Teesside Park requires discussion/ action by members and discussions with Teesside Park.

Council and Business meeting

On  Tuesday 19 October the club held its Council meeting and Business meeting at Middlesbrough Golf Club. The various committees reviewed progress on projects such as the Christmas charity float, main charity event  , membership and programme and fellowship. There are several interesting forthcoming events which can be viewed in our events diary.
